How It Works

ODFS Dropped Technical Overview

Man walking with briefcase. The ODFS is a Surface Functional Neuromuscular Stimulator.  The ODFS electrically stimulates the common peroneal nerve to produce contraction of the appropriate muscles to cause dorsiflexion of the ankle in individuals who have lost the ability to dorsiflex following neurological injury.

Wearing an ODFS Dropped Foot Stimulator

The device is comprised of a small belt-worn, single-channel stimulator that is controlled by a foot-switch and used with two surface electrodes.  The surface electrodes are typically placed over the common peroneal nerve as it passes near the head of the fibula and the motor point of the tibialis anterior in the lower leg.  The foot switch triggers the delivery of stimulation to be timed according to the gait of the user.

The clinician sets the stimulation parameters for each patient by adjusting a series of dials and miniature switches.

Who is a candidate for the ODFS Dropped Foot Stimulator

Suitable candidates for the ODFS device are individuals who are unable to dorsiflex the ankle and lift the foot due to a central nervous system injury for example: stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis or brain trauma. Individuals who are unable to produce dorsiflexion of the ankle due to lower motor neuron or peripheral nerve injuries would not benefit from this device.

Adjusting Device Parameters

Dorsiflexion and eversion is produced by stimulation of the common peroneal nerve and its two branches, the deep and superficial.  By careful adjustment of the electrode positions, the relative proportion on each nerve that is excited can be chosen, determining the movement produced. Various adjustments to electrode placement facilitate the optimal result for the individual. These adjustments are discussed during training and outlined in the Clinician Manual.
